Towing & Driving Tips
● Not 100% confident? Book a caravan towing lesson with a qualified instructor
● Install electronic stability control for added safety and peace of mind
● Confirm your vehicle is rated to tow your caravan safely
● At every stop, check the coupling connection, handbrake, and safety chain
● Allow for longer braking distances and give generous space between vehicles
● Pull over safely to let faster vehicles pass when needed
● Never overtake unless there’s a dedicated overtaking lane
● Always perform a pre-travel safety check before each leg of your journey
Maintenance
Even with regular servicing, it’s important to do a pre-trip check every time you hit the road.
- Check your caravan and tow vehicle for essential fluids, brakes, lights, mirrors, and battery health
- Inspect tyres for condition, pressure (refer to manufacturer guidelines), and wear
- Test your caravan brake system, and monitor for overheating during travel
- Tighten all coupling points, wheel nuts, and safety features before departure
- Ensure all water, and electrical connections are turned off and secured for transit
Caravan Security
● Lock your car and caravan whenever unattended — even for short stops
● Secure loose items inside the van to prevent damage during transit
● Double-check that fridge doors, cupboards, windows, and awnings are shut and locked
● Store your jockey wheel securely inside or lock it in place
● Consider a portable safe for valuables if travelling long-term
● Ensure your insurance is current, covering both the caravan and its contents
Fire Safety
● By law, your caravan must be fitted with a smoke alarm and fire extinguisher
● Test safety devices regularly to ensure they’re in working order
● Position heaters safely — away from furniture, fabrics, and fittings
● Stay informed by tuning into local radio stations during travel in case of nearby bushfires or emergencies
● Always disconnect all appliances while towing
