Pre-Travel Safety Checklist
Before you hit the road, make sure everything is ready to roll.
You’ve packed your bags, plotted your course, and planned your adventure — but before you head off, take a few minutes to go through this essential pre-travel checklist. It’s the best way to ensure a safe, stress-free start to your trip.
Towing Vehicle
Even with regular servicing, it’s important to do a pre-trip check every time you hit the road.
● Your vehicle has been recently serviced and is in good working order
● You’ve confirmed tow capacity matches your trailer’s loaded weight
● Ball weight has been checked with a scale
● Tyres (including the spare) are inflated to towing pressure
● Oil, coolant, brakes, mirrors, and battery have all been checked
Outside the Caravan / Trailer
● Coupling is securely attached to the tow ball
● Safety chains are connected and in good condition
● Breakaway cable (if fitted) is correctly anchored
● Handbrake is released before travel
● Wiring and plugs are clean, dry, and securely connected
● All lights are working — indicators, brakes, tail, number plate
● Tyres are in good condition and inflated to the recommended pressure
● Wheel nuts are tight
● Brakes engage and release properly
● Jockey wheel is raised and locked, or safely stowed
● Spare tyre is packed and ready
● Corner stabilisers are fully retracted
● Water tanks are filled
● Gas bottles are turned off, full, and secured
● Awnings, aerials, toolboxes, and accessories are packed and locked
● 240V mains is disconnected
Inside the Caravan / Trailer
● Loose items are secured — nothing should slide, tip, or rattle
● Fire extinguisher is in good condition and within expiry
● Fridge is closed and latched
● Cupboards and drawers are shut and secured
● Load weight is within safe limits
● All windows and vents are closed and latched
● 12V and 240V systems are functional
● Interior lights work
● Gas and electrical appliances are turned off
● Water pumps and drains are running clear
● Toilet is clean, flushed, and cassette emptied
● Toilet chemicals are packed if needed
